Was watching a documentary (called'Countdown')on the discovery channel, based on the Columbine School Shootout (1999). Watching this documentary has change the way I will see another news on a shoot out - forever. No. It really hasnt changed- its only given my fellings more depth and definition. Before, my reaction to such news was dominated by shock and disgust. Now I guess it would have sympathy and fear added in the list. I, from being a third party viewer, who holds no stake in that event ,started put my selves in the shoes of the victim, thanks to this documentary.
13, 15-17 year olds shot dead , 23 injured and serveral more lives changed forever by this heinious incident .All of this done by two boys- an 18 yr old and a 17 yr old (they shot them selves after commiting the crime) .They had been planning the attack for a long time. Stocking up a lot of rage in themselves. They were armed to the teeth! How could arms be so damn accessible ? And that too, to high school kids? As accessible as candy? These boys had hidden their creations & collections in their very own homes, where they lived with their parents ! How could it go unnoticed?!!! These boys have had serious problems with depression. They had been on Anger Management Programs- which obviously hadnt helped. They were highly suicidal and homicidal. They simply walked through the school shooting at anyone who met their sight. It might sound a lil odd- but i feel sorry to think of how two tender minds can grow up to be so distorted? So twisted in some pain that, they turned numb to others' ?!! How come parents and the doctors didnt take stock of the situation- they would have seen some sign ?
What has prompted me to write this entry , is the last statement in this documentary. Somthing to this effect -" This incident has prompted the strengthening of arms-control laws. The debate continues". THE DEBATE CONTINUES?!!! THERE IS A DEBATE?!! A DEBATE has two sides. somebody tell me, Whats the other side of this issue?! Dont tell me there are parents who think - 'How can my son go to school without a gun?!' This is absolutely absurd and outrageous! It definitely reflects on the lack of social responsibility by the a55h01e5 who have turned this into a debate. In my opinion- these people are the actual culprits and not the two boys - cos its this same attitude that has contributed to the scary metamorphosis of these boys into the monstors they will be remembered as .
India is begining to see its share of disturbing behaviours amoung youngsters. To remind you of some- the school boy who misused the camera in his mobile to capture pornographic images ... school and college students from financially stable backgrounds entering prostitution. Perhaps not attrocious as the massacre... but we need to see this as a sign of a changin season in our social(and moral) make up- tiny signs before the mighty storm. Today , India is a fast growing nation. It is bound to face the same problems that come with the upgrade , like many other nations have , before us. We have to observe, understand and learn from what we- as the human civilisation- have already experianced in other nations. There should be people who observe and study the changes in different stratas of the society, recognise relations and detect causes for similar distubances. See how they could have been avoided. Design methods that can help all of us grow as a part of a healthy society. We all have a responsibility towards each other. There were umpteen times and ways these boys could have been stopped- parents , teachers, students, police, doctors, etc. But they werent... fate had thought the other way around . Perhaps it was some kind of social alarm that went off , with the purpose of grabing our attention. In this particular case , a min-to-min reconstruction is possible because of the school security cameras. But , had you seen the documentary, you will have to agree that, what adds tremendously to our understanding of the deranged minds of the perpetrators are the home videos they themselves had left behind- that gives some closure to our disbelief in the possiblity that there could be people who think like this. Fueled by a passion to kill people- with or without reason. It would send a chill down your spine. The Indian society that is conservative by nature seems to be growing tolerant to a lot of changes that might facilitate and influence the development of dysfunctional citizens. Its time for all of us- Indian or not- to pay attention to the social changes around us and play our part to help guide our lifes to a better , healthier fullfillment , and on the whole, the societies . We make the society- dont we?
(Please forgive the profanity.)

Hi Nita, thanks for dropping by my blog, I see you were amused by my colorful antics... :-)
I read your post, very good compassionate insight. Unfortunately, there will be no lack of guns in the U.S., because they are very easy to obtain wether legally or illegally. And putting more gun laws on the books doesn't help, because if you intend to commit a criminal act you are going to do it regardless of the law.
I always said that school is one of the cruelest places you can send your kid, because it is very hard to fit in and find acceptance among your peers. And when you are a teenager your cohort's opinions often mean more to you then your own parents. The shooting spree was an attempt to gain a sense of self empowerment and a way to lash out against what they saw as one of the sources of their pain.
Well anyway, good post. Until we meet again, stay compassionate and out spoken, it suits you.

hi my friend....
thanks for visiting my blog and leaving such a nice comment on it...
you made me so much happy...
keep in touchm bye
I have spoken to a lot of people that tell me getting a gun is no easy task in their countries like the UK. Getting a gun in the US is pathetically easy, if you give me 200 american dollars and drop me off in queens, I can have a gun in a few hours. The guns used by the coloumbine kids were bought online! online with their credit cards, which proves the lack of security. The credit card of a 17 year odl shoudl have been denied when he attempted to buy a gun online. It is also easy to get guns at gunshows, they are big shows full of people sellign guns where you could buy one as long as you have a photo ID proving your 18. However if you drop me off in Manahattan with 20 american dollars I can have you a fake ID in all of 15 minutes. Worse yet these gunb shows do not run backround checks!!! So anyoen over 18, or has an ID(viod or real) can get a gun. The US is all big on our right to bear arms but it causes us more problems than tis worht. Moire than half of the guns here are unregeistered that mean we don't kno who has them or where they are.
Ill tell you what happens, somthign big like columbine happens and then every D.A in the US starts prosecuting stupid crimes liek a 4 year old holding a piece of chicken to resemble a gun in order to make an example out of him.
AJ though you have a poin there , we can defy our genes if it has no physiological effect... it only indicates a tendancy and not a concrete behaviour.i think laws if placed well... can definitely help this problem, of course it wont be a panacea. Just as the drugs issue was fiercely dealt with in the 80s and 90s... i would say the efforts have brought drugs-deal operations to a level where the trade is not in the open(atleast)... it has to hide to survive... but thats not the case with weapons deal. its very much a shameless open affair. Another issue that needs to be dealt with is this attitude that cries a 'necessity' for weapons- as if it is one of the basic essentials. Once the availability is curbed, this 'need' will automatically die.... thats what i think.
hi Nita!
thank you for your comments on my blogs. people like you motivate me to blog.
you've raised some long overdue social issues here. it has never seized to amaze me how blind and shortsighted the U.S authorities are not to see the detrimental effects of their laxed arm control. it has been proven over and again the cons of such a system far outweighs its benefits. coming from a country like singapore, owning a gun is enough to warrant a lifetime imprisonment..that is why gun-related offences are almost never heard of.
The thing about the drug problem in Americqa is that if the governemnt wanted to put a styop to it they would, except drugs are so good for the economy they won't. You have the dealers that are getting rich, you have the people buying. Than you have all the cops and other people that have to be hiured to combat the problem. In 1980's America there was a lot of Cocaine, this proved to be excellent for the econmoy as cocaine is a expensive drug. As cociane popularity faded, the market crashed in 87.
Hey neets, most of these things happen when you are suffering form psycological disorders or behavioral disorders. They don't know how to deal with people or life in general, were many things add up to their frustration and finally they release these enegeries which ends in a violent way.
Good post neets!
Jeremy , Pearl jam is based on school shoot-out... check out the video
Raghu brings up a good point, the song Jeremy by Pearl Jam is a pre-columbine example of violence in schools. If anyone has ever seen the un-censored music video its quite graphic but accuratley provides the viewer with the isloation, alienation and Imprisonment some schools systems create. For some people there school expierence, and the world is a cold Isolating place. Events liek this may have seemed like a way out for the columbine students, sad but true. But how do we prevent things like this, how can we prevent alienation?
i have been hearing a lot about isolation and alienation these days... somebody tell me how does these words figure in school life. i can understand if the child in question is being isolated because of some unfortunate handicap or some kind of discrimination... buut in the case of normal kids- how can they get isolated or alienated? please explain.
the depth of your belief and the strength of your conviction determines the power of your personality.
cheers
hi my friend, I knoe it is a long time since my blog's last update, but I am having a lot of tests these days and I have to study for them...
hope to get more mails of you, bye
.::SINA::.
When your growing up here in the US and going to school its a system. Everybody must be filtered threw the system. The system educates us, teaches us how to read and write and for the most part does a good job. Some people sub-consciously reject the system(alienation. This rejection brings feeling of imprisonment, I think there is no escaping this, you must learn how to overcome it. The system cannot be changed because two people rejected it, the key here is self awareness. One must be self-aware in order to work in harmony with this system, and many other system-like aspects of life. "Cemel Nosce" is latin for "Know thyself" one must know thyself, one must be slef-aware. One must be more than able to identify and pinpoint the problems that occur in life, if you can pinpoint them your one step closer to solving/overcoming them.
However this is easier said than done, perhaps this can be taught somehow during ones early childhood development.
Hey Jordon u are right, you need to be self-aware of things. Thats really a good point u have made, many a times we fail to be aware of things.
actually that raises another issue- self awareness... you should be conscious of the changes in your self- i absolutely agree. being aware can - if not solve , it can atleast -keep you aware of a problem.
but if sub-conscious rejection of the school-system was one of the causes of alienation ... then it should happen else where too. i strongly feel the emotional burden that growing up children have to bear at a young age now-a-days holds a crutial key to understanding how their minds can get distorted under emotional pressure. to understand what i have just said... think about kids between the age group of 3-12 - what are they exposed to now? how different was it from when we were of their age? that reminds me that adrenjunky had made this point too. they are smarter than we were - great. they seem to be aware of a lot of things that we came to know when we were 14/15- good.... but being aware of things that you dont need to know at that age can be dangerous- cos you havent learnt of how to deal with such info at that age. but after that initial growing phase self-awareness is what will serve as a watch-dog to your self.and this art of being self-aware prunes as years go by.
hi my friend...
I am sorry that I did not update my blog for a long time... now it is updated you can check it... thanks for ur support...
keep in touch
.::SINA::.
I have a friend, his family is from Turkey. His little sister is fluent in both English, Greek and Turkish. At the age of 6 she is fluent in these three languages because during your early years you are at a constant state of development. Im not a doctor or psychologist but I believe there is something that can be done during these years to prevent many problems, not just the ones brought up here.
I don't believe people are born serial killers, or born rapists. I belive that during their development they become them. Doctors need to study just what happens during our early years, to see if things can be prevented.
i see the point you are making... that that the age where foundations are layed. thats very true. actually ... its when you are 17 or 20-something that you realise how things you learn in your younger years influence your thinking soooo much.... no matter how much you grow to make your own ways... there is always this lingering finger print of what your parents and school put into you when you are a kid . :). and i strongly agree on the point that there should be vigorous study in this area .
This is developing into a very freudian conversation about early developent. Anyone here ever read Freud? Some call him a mad man, but I believe that there is much to learn from Dr. Freud. Furthermore how could we have prevented this massacre? I don't believe metal detectors at the doors of school do anything that just trys to thin the chances of it, we need to get to the source of the problem.
thank's nita for the greetings :)
im okay now:) God bless
and CHEERS:)
your discussion comes happens to be an alarming coincidence... you must have read about another shoot out that happened last week... sad...
This morning I was pleased to hear that many students from Columbine Highschool in Littleton, CO will be going to Minnesota to see the victims, parents, students and teachers of the last school shooting to help them cope and share expierences. So as horrible as these shootings are, perhaps good comes out of them and brings out the best in people.
Thanks, Nita, for visiting my blog and leaving such a nice comment.
This topic you raise here is very timely... for there have been a lot of problems here in the US with kids and mental illness and guns. I am staunchly for gun control, and I am with you that society has a lot of blame to take for these problems. As do the parents of the children. When you leave nintendo and rap music to raise your children... what do you expect? Life is frustrating and without guidance, children will choose whatever seems OK to them at the time to help them make sense of the chaos. Sometimes they choose well. In cases like this, when kids have felt abandoned, repressed and angry... they choose badly.
I have seen that video a number of times, the columbine one... it is shocking and heartbreaking. truly. sometimes I think we were so much better off before we became "civilized"
Is that your solution? Blame it on videogames and rap music? Do you have any idea how many people play videogames and listen to rap music? Millions of people do, so why aren't they bringing guns to school? Blaming pop culture doesn't do any good, we need to get to the psychological source of this problem.
By the way the shooters at Columbines were not fans of rap music they enjoyed metal like Marilyn Manson and Rammstien
Hey Nita nice blog abt the guns. Wat u dont realize is guns have been a part of this country for a long time and its really tuff to get rid of. One other thing wat u dont realize is that life here is actually one dimensional. These ppl are not used to being in a grp. Its much of lonely life, independent life, which leads to things like this happening more often. THe ppl who raise these kids are also most of the times irresponsible Zorro
Hi Nita,
Thanks for your nice comment. But really, my blog has content whatsoever. I'm using currently it as a playground for javascript hacks.
Really good and relevant post. Makes me think.
Bye,
Priyananda
I agree with SC. Playing video games and listening to rap cant be blamed.I think the problem lies in the fact that these people dont know how to evaluate things and take in whats necessary. A movie, a song... are all somebody's perception of what they experienced. and not the experience of the listener. Sometime the listener gets washed away into it... like sympathy turing into empathy. I enjoy some of M&M's songs. If M&M raps around about burying his mother, you should have the wisdom to understand that his childhood was difficult and that he might feel that way about his mom... but thats not how all moms are and thats not how you should feel about your mom.We should be able to teach growing kids of how to weigh issues and classify them. But of course SS does have a point in what she mentioned. These Video games manuf and artists have a responsibility toward the society , and should be careful about what they show and do.
And Zorro- thanks for visiting .Vivek is that you, you idiot?! Then how the hell did you respond so quickly?! :) Actually you brought out a very good point about the social make-up, their lifestyle. It has a direct impact on their out look. Very true,Zorro.
Hi. Well, actually, I did not blame rap music and video games. If you read what I said carefully, what I posited was that when parents leave those things to raise their children... bad things happen. I do not have a problem with these kinds of things at all. Look at my blog... I am a pop culture addict. But parents have a responsibility to guide and raise their children, and in this country they tend to shirk that. badly. I do not think people like Eminem cause acts of violence. I think a society that ignores problems and says "that is someone else's responsibility" does.
I completely agree with you on that. :) . thats exactly what i meant by saying "... teach growing kids of how to weigh issues and classify them. know how to evaluate things and take in whats necessary". Its parents and teachers who could do it.
No Nita its not Vivek, someone else... Maybe i just saw ur blog at the same time as you posted the comment... One other thing is there is no way to let out or vent out your anger or frustration here. The only place you can do that is on the ppl in and around you which in turn leads to hurting them. One other thing is the seating arrangement in the cafeteria. U might say wat the Beep does that hav to do with this??? It has a lot. Where you sit in a cafeteria(rather where u r allowed to sit) decides if u r popular or not. If not u stay alone most of the times minding ur own business and wit no friends to share it builds up to a point and then BOOM he has killed 30 students. If you look at most of the school shootings that have actually happened in the past its been done by lonely ppl. Ppl ignored by their class or their grp. I agree all these cud hav been stopped and as small squirrel said this happens wen ppl ignore their responsibilities as parents.Rap isnt the only one that depicts violence...rock does too (Pearl Jam - Jeremy) but thats know reason for a kid to shoot at ppl. THere has to be a build up before the outburst... and unfortunately nobody has the time or patience to see the build up and difuse it there.... ZORO
oops spelling mistake Zorro
hey thanx for ur coment.
this issue u have adressed here is somethin that i'm sure has been on evryone's mind. i m not sure if i wud agree wid ppl who say that its the western influence or even the influence of television its not that the tv or the exposure to heinous things is just some recent phenomenon. its more than jus some influence. history is as much a witness to crimes as the present. but 2day there has been a radical change in the fundamentals. n i stil havent figured out a plausible reason for it. first it was illiteracy n poverty.....so now is it literacy n affluence?? first it was hunger that instigated crime....so now is it the thirst for blood??
i wonder if there even is a solution for this.
hope to read some more on varied topics on ur blog. cya.
How i hope you could see the expressions on my face,Zorro! :) cant help laughing since this 'hide-and-seek' started. Its good fun! But jokes apart, the insight into the emotional aspect of this issue... the way you have taken something simple as sitting in the canteen and explainin how it would feel... nice. makes it easier to relate :).
La devil... thanks for commin! You sure do have a way with words... you brought out the contrast so well! :)
Interesting views. Thanks for dropping by my blog and commenting.
I don't think videogames or rap music has anything to do with it, millions of people have these things. Parents don't "leave" these things to raise their children. Children don't listen to rap and grow up thinking its ok to smoke L's and pop a few caps in their homeboy's ass. We are human beings we all have a moral compass we know that it is wrong ot kill eachother. This is a psychological problem, not a problem with pop-culture. Violence is Violence we have always included it in some sort of entertainment. Whether its action movies in 2005 or watching people be hung in 1515. The problem lies in the psychological development of these people, and violence plays a small role becuase we are all exposed to violence in some way.
On Another issue brought up in this blog about the US's policy on guns is very interesting. In the US's constituio a document that was written in the 1770's-1780's it says we have the right to bear arms. This still holds true today, but what people fail to realize is that society and guns have changed quite a bit since this was written. Back then they didn't have small portable and deadly handguns. Back then the only guns were these gigantic rifles, manual load rifles. This document has to be changed! There are guins for hunting and guns for self-defense, but then there are guns that are clearly only for assualt and have no purpose. For aroudn 50 years the gun industry was restricted by the assualt rifle ban, unfortunatley this ban expired during the election. President bush was so busy winning an election he did nothing, and now very dnagerous guns are availible to the public.
Good to see u change ur blog too, how abt this i give u clues and lets see if u can guess who it is ??? Games and OfCoures Jokes apart.. The other reason why we see so many shoot outs might be due to the fact that the ppl here are meat lovers...Red meat has been known to increase animal instincts( i am speaking from memory here wit no articles to back me up it might be false as well)... The other might be the actual peer pressure on a kid... Wat Kind of peer pressure ??? Lets say a kid is made to sit all alone...why do they do that ???? Hey he is not cool enuf for us.. Havent we done that in college?? The kid has no where else to go... he thinks why am i so uncool??? Might be my clothes.. lets buy some.... no money to buy new clothes....... where do u end up???? All alone again. Wen i am alone i get weird ideas and if i am down and alone then god save the world if someone doesnt come by and cheer me up.. Wat shud happen to the kid?? He is alone rummaging thru th house for something to wear or some money...finds a loaded gun and rest is history...... Zorro
SC:Thats a very interesting information you've got there! there is still such an act?!!!
Its time they realise that time demands a change now.
As for violence in media. I dont think it can kick-start violence or rage (definitely not a cause)but it sure can help aggrevate it,it could urge them to vent it out.It would make some people(who are depressed ,frustrated ,in agony) think,'Ya,y not do something about this damn feeling!Let me take it out on the world.Let them know how damn well i feel!'. There are two ways you can do something about the feeling:1)channelise your attention to other constructive things or 2)channelise attention into doing destructive thing. (2) is much, much easier than (1). Its more gratifying too. You have done away with a bad feeling atleast for the moment. I think i have to agree with SS that there should be some control over the violence in media. But i definitely dont agree in saying that it may be a cause. I think parents play a big part in promoting option (1). Some of them dont even think about it.
Z:Sure that would be fun. A hide&seek that spans across the seas(or land if you are in India). :) Cool. You seem to be real good at expressing and understanding people's feeling. Well done explination!
Thank you mademoiselle you are very kind... those are the phrases H.Poirot uses... I did giv u a clue in the last Comment..i think u failed to see it..Yes its across seas...u think u dont know me but u actually do........
oops forgot Zorro
Well Zorro,I know very few people across seas. Ya the clue... that you changed the look of your blog too... ... ...
I am sure I might know ABOUT you but dont know you.Are you Malu's cous(since you dont want people to know who posted those comments)? You are thats the only blog that i know of that has changed its looks.
- oh! so that people gdont get lost ... that msg was for Zorro
When I looked into the massacre I discovered something a tad disturbing. I dont know a lot about guns, I dont even want to, Im not a fan of them. But was clear to me and others that the guns used by the columbine shooters were not for self-defense or hunting it was clear that these weapons were for one thing...ASSUALT! I don't think there should be guns in the US, but that will never happen. If the US must have guns we should have them for reasons, like hunting and self-defense. Not weapons like these.
Hi! my webcam thanks u for the great grading :-)! thanks for dropping by.....ur blog makes for interesting reading....guns and the US ...well, i guess they are like the lost brothers of bollywoood's khumbh mela....they will always find each other!...sad but true!
SC:Guns r guns . there shud b a strict regulation over it- be it for assault,self-defence or hunting. If my memory isnt wrong, there were home-videos of these boys buying and testing these guns . They were more than just easily available. They procured these weapons like buys vegitables of a market shelf!!! One of the ways they got a gun was in a guns' fair , where they used a friend who was doing his doctorate in some university. That guy bought the guns in his name(using his identity), when actually the people who paid for it was these kids... where the hell did they get the money?! are weapons all that cheap there? Perhaps weapons manufacturing shouldnt be privatised, after all. i dont know if i am saying the right thing... but if you think from my angle... y there is such a natural necessity for weapons to proliferate in the market is simply cos there is competetion (privatisation ecourages competetion , which in turn encourages bettering in quality -do we really need this kind of encouragement in the arms industry?). For some manufacturers anything to beat competetion is fair. and the govt being democratic dont want to put a stop to it cos then they will be indirectly killing their democratic image(thru killing freedom to compete). They should take serious moves to stop all means that make weapons easily available. Manufacturers may participate in Govt recognised or organised exhibitions which have fairly expensive entree tickets. that way you can block people's exposure to such commodities. I think it is simple and might be effective. Another way perhaps might be to , increase the taxes on the kind of metal used to manufacture weapons. That way the manufacturers have no other go but to load that money on the cost of the commodity therefore discouraging commoners from buying it. I really dont know it these are already implemented and whether they will work. But to my lmtd knowledge and my logic it seems to be a good proposal. What do you say?
Aru: Pakade gaye ya :)! I know that was real fun. Too bad i was a lil smart for it! ;) I should have known it when you said its all in the name :)) . Actually you have so intelligently placed the sentence that it would have easily gone unnoticed... but too bad i caught it. Then too i had a doubt whether it was you, cos the way you wrote those comments , as though some old, long-lost friend was playing a prank... it stands out as a contrast to the fact that we have never-ever met or dont know eachother at all. That was reaaal nice, dude! :) Oye... dont forget to share some of those recipies...! :)
Karthik: I love your sense of humour, it comes out well in your blod too. :) that 'khumbh ke mele' comparison was just too good! Hows your assignments going pal?
Unfortunatley Nita guns are readily availible here, they are not hard to get. Many of these gun shows sell used weapons that can probably be bought very cheap. There are guns shows all the time, I see them advertise.
Why is it so difficult to put something thats happenin so much in the open to end? Does't it make it just that easier because it is in the open. I some law it passed to stop gun-shows then it would be so easy to book these guys ,right?
I don't care how long guns have been around, in case you havent realized THERE NOT GOOD! Guns are doing absolutley nothign for the US.I would rather piss off a bunch of hunters and constitutionalists than have 10,000 people die a year of hand-guns alone.
Hi,
Nice post here.
Guess there's a lot of stress involved in the way people live their life here when compared to india. Ofcourse, the stress is their own making but moreso from the 'Winner takes All' concept that symbolizes this place. Losers get into such acts.
India is still going easy on such things. Our fundamental concepts of living might not change for quite some time and hopefully all will be well.
Chill
hi Nita,
its shocking when really small chilren kill without knowing y r they doin it. its not jus the failins of the parents but also society as whole. and now just when u fell that u have bcum desentitized enough to be shocked any more, u have the rape of a 17 tr old girl by a policeman! wish i cud turn to tom n jerrry shows for comfort n feel small n in=gnorant again, but in the toons too u r shaken by the mindless violence making me wonder, is it there that all this began?
btw, thanks for commenting on my blogs.
Noisy Ghost good point, I never thought about it that way. On a different point, Jeb Bush the governor of Florida is now passing a law that allows people to use a fireman as long as they are preventing, or preventing someone from commiting a felony. So I could kill someone, and say that I thought they were going to commit a felony and be protected by this law. It just goes to show how much guns are part of our society.
one quality post per month philosophy ahh? ur a good writer..do chk my blog

Nita come back, we miss you!
Hi there,
I dont have any spcific comment to make on the article, just had Q. Was this Nita ever in Al-Dhafra School, Ruwais? If so then I would really like to get in touch with you, I might actually be a very old class mate of yours.
Do let me know on wahajmehdi@yahoo.com , does the name ring a bell Nita?
Certainly it's responsibility of the society and not just the two students in this case .What u had told maps this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ssYezFw_Qs , said more than 2 decades b4 itself by George Carlin.
>>. -- Well said , awesome...
